After a phone comes into contact with rain, a drink or another liquid, a dry exterior does not mean that the inside is dry. Liquid can reach the display edges, charging port, earpiece, camera area or motherboard. Applying power while moisture or residue remains can increase the risk of a short circuit and corrosion.
Stop charging and repeated power-on attempts
If the phone is still on, and it is safe and responsive enough to do so, shut it down normally. Do not keep pressing the power button simply to see whether it still works. Disconnect chargers, power banks and computer cables.
If the phone has already switched off, avoid repeated forced restarts. A no-power symptom can involve the battery, charging path, display, motherboard power circuit or another component. Repeatedly applying power does not identify the cause and may make the condition more complicated.
Dry the outside without using heat
Use a clean, absorbent soft cloth to dry the exterior and remove the protective case. If the SIM tray can be removed without forcing it, take it out and leave the opening unobstructed.
Avoid hair-dryer heat, ovens, direct hot sunlight or other high-temperature methods. Heat can affect adhesives, the battery, display and other components. Placing the phone in rice cannot confirm that the inside is dry and does not remove liquid residue or corrosion.
If the device becomes unusually hot, smells abnormal, appears swollen or has a deformed casing, stop charging and handling it. Keep it in a ventilated area away from flammable materials and arrange professional assessment promptly.
Record what happened
The following details are more useful to a technician than repeated power attempts:
- the phone brand and exact model;
- whether it contacted clean water, rain, a drink or another liquid;
- approximately when it happened and how long the exposure lasted;
- whether the phone was used, charged or powered on afterward;
- whether it showed a black screen, shut down, developed touch problems, lost sound or behaved differently;
- whether important data is stored on it, and whether recovering that data is more important than returning the phone to everyday use.
State your data priority before work starts
The direction for making a water-damaged phone usable again may differ from the direction for assessing data recovery. If the data matters, say so before inspection or software work begins and describe the types of files that are most important.
Neither repair nor data recovery can be guaranteed in advance. The result depends on where the liquid reached, the type of liquid, corrosion, storage components and the actual motherboard condition. Reducing further power attempts and arranging an early assessment can help preserve the original fault condition for inspection, but it does not guarantee repair or complete data preservation.
